Better late than never

We've been as busy as everyone else this last week or two with end of term school stuff (roll on Friday!), two craft fairs, music practice, parties to plan and on and on and on. I still have to make a Bollywood outfit (help) and wrap presents and post some cards, but we're getting there.

Unfortunately my lovely plans for a a decorating weekend and a full day of sewing today were destroyed by a rampaging stomach bug that felled Tiny Small at the weekend and then me today (72 hours incubation?! Someone's having a laugh).

Anyway, I messed up Splash of Colour so instead I give you a Splash of Light in two parts, first Mr DC's birthday cake groaning under the weight of hundreds and thousands. Is it me or are they just far less vibrant than those of my childhood. I really wasn't going for tasteful here:

And second, my astonishingly blonde and beautiful Tiny Small dressed as Santa Lucia - I "made" the crown with tinsel and IKEA battery powered stars, and she put the rest of the outfit together herself. Paired with furry boots she looked good enough to eat, but I settled for ginger star biscuits instead. And even better was the fact that her fabulous elder sister let her parade around and have a whale of a time without once complaining that it should have been her turn.

Hope you're staying healthy. I'm feeling almost able to eat some dinner which given that I couldn't even face water this morning is a big step forward, believe me!

  1. Oh, you completely have my sympathy. I do hope you are fully mended very soon. I have the lurgy too, but not the stomach sort - more the endless snot sort.

And hundreds and thousands are definitely less vibrant than we were little. The ones Waitrose sells are pathetically pastel. Tracy recommended a fantastic website called Make A Wish which sells amazingly bright and zingy sprinkles of all shapes for your cakes. Do give them a try - I have tiny greena nd red Christmas tree sprinkles on my cakes at the moment!

  2. Oh Val sorry you've been struck down by the lurgy too! After 72 hours you must have thought you were safe - that's one mean and nasty bug! Super picture of Tiny Small - she makes the most perfect Christmas angel. The cake looks gorgeous too and I know what you mean about hundreds and thousands they are so very pastel these days although they were probably saturated with all those nasty e numbers when we were small!

Hope you're fully recovered soon and in the meantime get a chance for a bit of rest and relaxation for the remainder of the week.

  4. Do hope you are all back to full health really soon. Adore the Santa Lucia head-dress, a perfect angel! Can't wait to see your bollywood outfit, I went to a bollywood fancy party and ended up in Clares accessories buying armfuls of tiny golden bangles!

  6. Go away horrible bugs and germs. I dislike you all intensely.

I am now dreaming of SmallerBean dressed up with Santa Lucia gorgeousness. Pox on her face quickly wakes me from my reverie. Ah well, there's always next year... Ax

  10. You poor dear! Hope you're as good as new by morning. And yes, Tiny S. makes a gorgeous Lucia. At our house we had to settle for my very un-girlish husband playing the part, but as he came bearing fresh-baked orange-scented scones and a pot of tea, he was forgiven.

  13. Oh, you poor thing. And yes, a white dress and a bit of bling can angel up a child something rotten. Littlest actually did some shoplifting the other day (a chocolate ball she poked out of a net of them); the irony being that she was freshly washed and gleaming from swimming, and wearing her angel costume for the school nativity. Try getting that to apologise to the cashier while you both keep a straight face.

  21. Tell me about Santa Lucia. I know the song and I know your little one looks exquisite there but what did she do?

72 hours you say? It's the same bug we had. So sorry - I so hope it's gone

  22. Oh no, "rampaging" and "stomach bug" are not words you really want in the same sentence. Hope you've regained an appetite for mince pies.

  25. Aw, sorry to hear that you've been under the weather.

Those stars make it look a lot more impressive than the halo my mum made out of tinsel when I was an angel in the school Nativity play...

Love the beautiful candle lit and fairy light photos with your sweet St. Lucia (Ikea lights much better than candles on the head!).
